A Reserve Snapshot Is Not a Full Audit

A Reserve Snapshot Is Not a Full Audit
Original editorial diagram. Research framework; no market data.

A crypto platform can show a large balance and still leave the investor with unanswered questions. A reserve snapshot answers a narrower question than a full picture of the business. The useful habit is to read the scope before reacting to the headline number.

What the source actually says

The PCAOB Office of the Investor Advocate’s March 8, 2023 staff advisory warns that proof-of-reserves reports are not audits. Such reports generally verify assets at a particular moment. Depending on the engagement, they may omit liabilities, customer rights, borrowed assets or other information needed to judge whether customers can recover their funds. They do not establish that those assets will remain available after the snapshot. The advisory is staff guidance, not a new Board rule.

Four questions for the report

  1. What exact date, assets and entities does the report cover?
  2. Does its stated scope address the liabilities those assets must support?
  3. What does it establish about ownership, borrowing or restrictions on those assets?
  4. What information covers the period after the snapshot?

If the document does not answer a question, write “unknown” in your research notes. An impressive dashboard is not a substitute for the missing evidence. Read the actual report and its limitations rather than relying on a platform’s summary or badge.

Investor’s view

My preference is to treat each document as evidence for the claim it actually supports. A full audit is not a guarantee of safety either; expanding the evidence does not remove business, operational or market risk. This article evaluates a research method and makes no finding about any particular exchange.
