The TradeSherpa checklist for custody, staking and a trade you can explain

October 18, 2026 · Cryptocurrency education By Michael Alexander, Investor

A chart can show where a cryptocurrency has traded. It cannot tell you who controls your keys, whether an advertised yield carries extra obligations, or whether your exit plan survives a bad week. The useful first question is practical: what exactly am I buying, holding or agreeing to do?

1. Write down who holds the keys

A custodial balance and a self-custodied wallet create different responsibilities. With a custodian, access depends on another party. With your own wallet, protecting recovery information and preparing backups become your responsibility. Bitcoin.org's wallet-security guidance discusses both online-service risks and the importance of secure backups.

For an operator, the test is simple: could you explain how access would be recovered after losing a device? Never share a recovery phrase with a person, chatbot or website claiming it is required for routine support.

2. Ask what the yield actually pays you for

Ethereum's documentation distinguishes solo staking, staking services and pooled approaches. Those choices differ in infrastructure, third-party dependence and risks. Solo validation and a token that represents a pooled staking position are different arrangements.

Before comparing rates, identify the asset being committed, who performs validation, the fees and the exit process. Review the specific arrangement's technical and counterparty risks. A reward percentage is only one part of that assessment; changes in the asset's price affect the value of what you hold. This checklist makes no claim about a current staking rate or the suitability of any service.

3. Separate the research from the order

Our editorial approach is to record the idea, the evidence, the conditions that would invalidate it and the maximum exposure being considered. That discipline is useful even when the eventual decision is to pass.

TradeSherpa currently offers free educational Paper Practice with manually entered practice prices, a watchlist and a journal. It does not execute brokerage orders or synchronize a trading account. Use a simulated entry to test whether you can explain the position before considering a real-money decision elsewhere.

Today's operator takeaway

Choose one crypto idea and complete three sentences: “I control access by ___.” “The return depends on ___.” “I would reconsider the idea if ___.”

If the answers are unclear, the next task is research. A rising price does not fill in the blanks.
